Greenwich is no longer regarded as the center of the world, despite the continuing worldwide use of
the Greenwich Meridian and Greenwich Mean Time.
Although it is possible to reach Greenwich by tube, it seems fitting that most visitors arrive by boats
leaving from Westminster Bridge or Tower Pier (дамба). For Greenwich owes (обязан) its prominence
(известность) to its position as the capital port of once-great seafaring (мореплавание) nation; the first
sight which greets those arriving at its docks is that of the tall masts of a British ship, the Cutty Sark, built in
1869. This graceful clipper, now housing a small naval museum, was the fastest ship in the world when she
carried tea from the Orient to England. But Greenwich is more than a living monument to the ships of
Britain. It pays homage (уважение) to the British seamen who sailed them. Not far from where Cutty Sark
is permanently docked, is a frail-looking (хрупкий) 48-metre ketch (небольшое двухмачтовое судно)
called Gypsy Moth. On it, Sir Francis Chichester at the age of 65 sailed alone around the world in 1966,
stopping only once in Sydney, Australia, on his journey of over 64,000 km.
After leaving the docks, most visitors stroll to the nearby Greenwich Park, which was laid out as a
royal park for Charles II to the design of Le Notre, Louis XIV’s landscape gardener. Many visitors find the

Garden.
