THE PLOT OF THE FILM
A COMEDY DRAMA DIRECTED BY DAVID FRANKEL
BASED ON THE BOOK OF THE SAME NAME BY
LAUREN WEISBERGER, TELLING ABOUT A GIRL WHO
GOT A JOB AT ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL
FASHION MAGAZINES. THE FILM ATTRACTED
ATTENTION, AMONG OTHER THINGS, BY THE FACT
THAT, ACCORDING TO CRITICS, ANNA WINTOUR,
THE EDITOR OF VOGUE MAGAZINE, KNOWN FOR HER
TOUGH LEADERSHIP STYLE, BECAME THE
PROTOTYPE OF ONE OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS. THE
FILM IS ONE OF THE RECORD HOLDERS FOR THE
COST OF COSTUMES, WHICH AMOUNTED TO ABOUT
A MILLION DOLLARS.
HISTORY OF CREATION
• THE FILM'S DIRECTOR DAVID FRENKEL AND PRODUCER
WENDY FINERMAN READ THE BOOK "THE DEVIL WEARS
PRADA" IN ITS PUBLISHED FORM[1]. ITS FILM
ADAPTATION WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FRENKEL'S
SECOND MAJOR WORK. HE, CINEMATOGRAPHER
FLORIAN BALLHOUSE AND COSTUME DESIGNER
PATRICIA FIELD ALREADY HAD SERIOUS EXPERIENCE IN
SHOOTING SUCH FILMS, AS THEY PARTICIPATED IN THE
CREATION OF THE SERIES "SEX AND THE CITY".
COSTUME DESIGN
• FRANKEL, WHO WORKED WITH PATRICIA FIELD ON MIAMI RHAPSODY EVEN
BEFORE HIS DEBUT SEX AND THE CITY, KNEW THAT CHOOSING GOOD
COSTUMES FOR ACTORS STARRING IN A FILM ABOUT THE FASHION
INDUSTRY WAS AN EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TASK. "MY ROLE WAS TO
RECRUIT ACTORS AND LEAVE," HE JOKED LATER.
• THE DESIGNERS WHO DIDN'T WANT TO APPEAR ON SCREEN HELPED FIELD A
LOT WITH THE COSTUMES. HOWEVER, THE ORIGINALLY PLANNED BUDGET OF
$100,000 (ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND) WAS NOT ENOUGH, IT HAD TO BE
REPLENISHED WITH THE HELP OF FRIENDS FROM THE INDUSTRY. IN THE END,
THE COSTUME DESIGN COST THE FILMMAKERS $1 MILLION, WHICH MADE
THE FILM ONE OF THE MOST EXPENSIVE IN HISTORY BY THIS INDICATOR.
MIRANDA'S NECKLACE ALONE WAS BOUGHT FOR $100,000.
