in the future. The acting was really good

dinner and she is very happy. Then she

film. One to miss. ★

‘The best film this year.’ So I went to see it!
I liked watching the two actors - Nell Ash
and Peter Brock - because I think they
were both excellent. But the story was
awful. After only ten minutes, I guessed
the end of the film! OK for a rainy day.

1 A Stranger in Woodend

n Saturday, 31st October, 1964, a m an arrived in the village. It
was late in the evening. He was looking for somewhere to stay
the night. He knocked at a door and a woman opened it.
‘G ood evening, madam ,’ the m an said. ‘I’m sorry it’s so late. But
can you help me, please? Is there a h otel in this village? I w ant to
stay here tonight.’
T he woman laughed. ‘A hotel? Here in W oodend? N o, sir, I’m
afraid there isn’t.’
‘W h at a pity,’ said the man. ‘I’m a stranger here. A n d I w ant to
see your village tomorrow.’
T he stranger was very polite. He was tall and had dark hair. A nd
he had strange green eyes.
‘Perhaps Mrs H arrison can help you,’ the woman said.
‘She has a room. Perhaps you can stay w ith her. W ait a m inute.
I’ll get my coat, and I’ll take you there.’
T he woman took the stranger to Mrs H arrison’s house.
Mrs H arrison gave him a room for the night. He was very glad. It
was th e last night of O ctober and it was cold.
T he n ext day was Sunday. T he m an looked round the village. He
was very interested in the history of the village.
He m et some of the villagers and asked them their names.
But he did n o t visit the church. T h a t was unusual. T h e church
in W oodend was the most beautiful building in the village. But the
stranger was n o t interested in it. He did n o t go to church th a t night
w ith all the villagers. It was the first Sunday evening of November.
W h en the villagers came out of the church, the m an had gone.
T hey had all liked him. T he ladies had thought he was very goodlooking.
A few weeks later, he came back. It was the first Sunday in
December. T he villagers were coming out of church. It was cold and
dark.
‘Hello he said.’ ‘I’m back again. It’s nice to see you all once m ore.’
His n ext words surprised everyone.
‘Perhaps you can help m e,’ he said. ‘I’m looking for a house. I
w ant to buy a house here.’
‘Here?’ someone said. ‘But why here? T h ere’s no work in
W oodend for a young man. A ll th e young people leave the village.
T hey find work in Lidney, the nearest tow n.’
‘I’ll get a job somewhere,’ th e stranger said. ‘Perhaps in Lidney.’
T h en one of the villagers told him about old Mr S m ith’s house.
M r Sm ith had died in the summer. His house was empty. It was for
sale. T he house was on the corner of M ain Street and C hurch Lane.
‘I’ll ask about the house tomorrow,’ said the young man.
‘Perhaps I’ll be lucky. Goodbye. I’ll see you soon.’
T he villagers w atched him leave. They all saw his car. It was very
big and luxurious. H e looked rich.
A few days later, Mr S m ith’s house was sold. A nd in the middle of

December, th e young stranger arrived. H e moved into the house and
worked very hard. He fixed the roof. H e repaired broken windows.
H e painted and decorated. H e changed the whole house.
But there was a big surprise for the villagers. O n the morning
of Monday, 21st December, they saw a big sign on the front of the
house. A n d on the sign were these words:

A few weeks later, he came back.
The villagers were coming out o f church.
2 The Village Meeting
T
he villagers could n o t believe it. A shop in Woodend!
Everybody talked about it. T here was once a shop in W oodend,
but it had closed tw enty years ago.
Some people w anted the shop, but others did not. T he villagers
m et in the evening in the village hall. Everybody was there.
Everybody was interested in the new shop.
‘The Corner Shop is a good idea,' someone said. ‘We need a village
shop. We w on’t need to go to Lidney.’
T h en Mrs H arrison spoke. She liked th e stranger, Dave Slatin.
‘I agree,’ she said. ‘A village shop is a good idea. It’s too quiet
here. W oodend needs a shop.’
‘N onsense,’ said Miss Brown. She was the village schoolteacher.
‘Lidney is n o t far away. T here are lots of shops there.’
Soon everybody was shouting. T h e n M r H art spoke. He was a
very big man, w ith a loud voice.
‘Listen, everybody!’ he shouted. ‘W e’ve never had trouble in this
village before. W e’ve always been quiet and happy. Now this shop is
causing trouble.’
‘Let M r Slatin speak,’ someone said. ‘It’s his shop. Let him speak.’
‘Ladies and gentlem en,’ said Dave Slatin. ‘I don’t w ant to cause
any trouble. I’m still a stranger in your village. But I w ant to be one
of you. I w ant to be your friend. I like the people of W oodend!’
H e smiled and a few7people clapped. T hey liked him.
‘The Corner Shop will sell lots of things,’ he w ent on. ‘It will sell
food and things for th e house. Everything will be cheap, I promise!’
Everybody was listening carefully.
‘A nd I have another idea,’ he continued. ‘I’ll sell village products.’
‘W hat do you m ean by “Village products”?’ asked Miss Brown.
‘I’ll tell you, Miss Brown,’ he said. ‘I know th a t you make beautiful
bread and cakes.’
Miss Brown smiled. Yes, she did make bread and cakes.
Everyone knew that.
‘A nd you, M r H art, I’ve seen your flowers. You grow beautiful
flowers.’
Now M r H art smiled. Yes, his flowers were beautiful.
Everyone knew about them .
‘A nd M r Everett makes pots,’ someone said.
‘A nd Mrs Davies makes dolls,’ said another voice.
‘A nd I do paintings of the village,’ said old Miss Lucy
Gray.
‘Yes,’ said Dave. ‘You can all do something. You villagers are
clever. You make lots of things. W e can sell them to the tourists. In
the summer, W oodend can make a lot of m oney!’
‘But w hat about th e money?’ said Mr H art. ‘How will you pay us?’
‘T h a t’s a good question,’ said Dave. ‘A nd here’s the answer. You’ll
bring your things to me and I’ll sell them for you. I’ll keep some of
the profit. You’ll have the rest.’
‘W h at a good idea!’ said Miss Brown.
‘Yes, I agree!’ said M r H art.
A ll the villagers agreed. Everyone in th e village was happy w ith
Dave S latin’s plan.
The Corner Shop opened on Monday, 4 th January, 1965. Soon the
shop was busy and Dave needed an assistant.
T he new assistant in The Corner Shop was A nna. She started work
in late January.
The villagers met in the evening in the village hall.
Everybody was there.
3 The Corner Shop
D
ave Slatin kept his promises. Things at the shop were good and
cheap.
‘How does he do it?’ asked Mrs Harrison. ‘It’s winter, but h e ’s
selling lots of fruit and vegetables. A n d they’re cheap. I never go to
Lidney now.’
T he other villagers agreed. The Corner Shop was a success and
Dave seemed happy. He paid A n n a good wages. Sometimes her
friend, Peter, helped at the shop and Dave gave him money too.
Dave advertised in newspapers and th e village products sold well.
People from Lidney came to The Corner Shop.
T here were lots of visitors and W oodend became more
interesting. T h e villagers were surprised, but pleased. T hey were
m aking a lot of money.
Dave lived alone, in a flat above th e shop. H e was very popular in
the village, but no one ever w ent to his flat. N o one ever saw inside
it.
A t the bottom of the stairs there were two doors. O n e led into the
stockroom. T h e other door had a notice o n it:
SPECIAL ORDERS ONLY: KEEP O U T
T h e door was always locked. A n n a never w ent into the Special
Orders room.
‘W hy do you lock th a t room, Dave?’ A n n a asked one day. ‘W h at’s
in there?’
‘It’s for special orders,’ h e replied. ‘Big orders.’
‘But you w on’t get any big orders in W oodend,’ said
A nna.
Dave said nothing. H e did n o t w ant to talk about th a t room.
The new assistant in The Corner Shop was Anna.
Sometimes her friend, Peter, helped at the shop.

or three m onths, everything was normal.
T hen, one day in April, an unusual customer came into the
shop. T he new customer was a very beautiful woman. She was
wearing expensive clothes and arrived in a large car.
‘Is this The Corner ShopV the woman asked. She looked round and
seemed a little surprised.
‘Yes,’ replied A nna. ‘T his is The Corner Shop. It’s the only shop in
the village.’
‘I’m looking for Mr Slatin, th e owner of the shop,’ said the
woman.
‘I th in k h e ’s upstairs,’ said A nna. ‘I’ll go and get him.
Does he know your name?’
‘Yes, I th in k so,’ was the reply. ‘Tell him . . .’ T he woman stopped.
‘Tell him Miss G ordon is here. Miss G reta G ordon.’
A nna was amazed. ‘A re you G reta G ordon, the film star?’
‘Yes, th a t’s right.’
T he woman smiled, but she was nervous.
‘W ait a m inute,’ said A nna. ‘I’ll tell M r Slatin th a t you’re here.’
A n n a ran to th e bottom of the stairs and called ‘Dave! Dave!
T here’s someone to see you!’
‘W ho is it?’ asked Dave from upstairs.
‘Miss G reta G ordon!’ shouted A nna. ‘It’s G reta Gordon! T h e film
star!’
‘I’m coming!’ he said, and he came down immediately.
‘I’m pleased to m eet you, Miss G ordon,’ h e said.
‘G ood m orning,’ said G reta Gordon. She and Dave shook hands.
She had beautiful hands and she was wearing beautiful diamond
rings! A n n a had never seen so many diamonds before.
Miss G ordon looked round. ‘Is this where you work, M r Slatin?’
she asked. O nce again, she seemed nervous.
‘Yes,’ said Dave. ‘It’s a small place, but it’s big enough for me.
Please follow me, Miss G ordon.’
A nna was surprised. Dave and G reta G ordon did n o t know each
other. H e did n o t call her ‘G reta’, and she did n o t call him ‘Dave’.
H e seemed to be in a hurry, and she seemed to be frightened.
A nna w atched them . Dave and G reta G ordon w ent to the back of
the shop and into the Special Orders room.
G reta G ordon was a Special O rder customer! A n n a thought th at
was very strange. She w anted to tell someone about G reta Gordon.
A nna loved films. She w anted to tell Peter about th e film star. But
she had to stay in the shop.
Ten minutes later, G reta G ordon came out of the Special Orders
room. Dave w ent straight upstairs and G reta G ordon came to the
front of the shop.
T he film star looked terrible! She was pale. She was crying. H er
eyes were red w ith tears.
‘W h a t’s wrong?’ asked A nna. ‘C an I help you, Miss Gordon?’
‘N o, thanks. I’m all right,’ said G reta Gordon.
‘Do you w ant to sit down?’ said A nna.
She got a chair and the film star sat down.
‘Shall I get the doctor?’ said A nna.
‘No! N o!’ said G reta. ‘Please tell no one about my visit here.
Please tell no one.’
A n n a was disappointed. She w anted to tell everyone about G reta
G ordon. She w anted to tell everyone about her famous customer.

‘I w ant to give you som ething,’ said G reta Gordon.
‘H ere’s a photograph of me. I’ll sign it.’
She signed the photograph and gave it to A nna.
‘Please keep this,’ said G reta. A n d please keep our secret. Please
d on’t tell anyone.’
‘A ll right,’ said A nna. ‘I promise.’
T h e film star kissed A nna. She held A n n a’s hands.
W h a t a beautiful woman, thought A nna. A n d w hat beautiful
hands!
T h en A n n a noticed something. T he diam ond rings were gone.
Then, one day in April, an unusual customer
came into the shop.

ave never talked about G reta G ordon. H e never talked about
her visit to The Corner Shop. O ne day, A n n a asked him about
the film star.
‘How do you know G reta G ordon?’ said A nna. ‘Is she a friend of
yours?’
‘I don’t w ant to talk about her,’ Dave replied. ‘She was a Special
O rder customer. D on’t ask any more questions about her, A n n a.’
So A n n a did n o t ask any more questions. She did n o t ask about
G reta G ordon’s Special O rder and she did n o t ask about the rings.
A n n a kept her promise. She never told anyone about the film star.
Soon it was spring. A n n a and Dave were busy. Mr H art brought
lots of flowers to The C om er Shop and A n n a sold them to the
tourists. T here were lots o f tourists th a t year.
In May, Peter asked A n n a to marry him . She said yes. They
became engaged. They planned to get married in th e following year.
N ow they needed money, so they worked hard and they saved. They
were very m uch in love. O n Saturdays, Peter played football or
cricket, and A n n a often w ent to the cinem a in Lidney. H e enjoyed
sports and she loved w atching films.
O ne day, A n n a was reading Film News. T his was a magazine
about film stars. She turned the pages. T here was a picture of G reta
Gordon!
A nn a was pleased. W h at a surprise! Beautiful Woman was going to
be a big film. A nd now G reta G ordon had the star part.
A n n a w anted to tell Peter about G reta, but she kept h er promise.
She did n o t tell anyone.
But she did show Film News to Dave Slatin.
‘Look, D ave,’ she said. ‘H ere’s a story about G reta
G ordon’ Isn’t it great! S he’s got the big part in Beautiful Woman.’
Dave looked at the magazine.
‘I don’t know anything about films,’ h e said. ‘Is G reta
G ordon a big star?’
A n n a laughed. ‘Big star? Yes, she is! S he’s terrific!’
Dave did n o t seem interested. ‘I hope she’s happy w ith her big
part,’ was all he said.

A nna thought for a m om ent. ‘A ll right,’ she said. ‘You take me to
th e best cinem a and to th e best restaurant. T h e n I’ll come w ith you.’
‘O f course!’ laughed Dave. ‘A nything you want, A n n a !’
So th e n ext afternoon Dave and A n n a w ent together to Lidney.
T hey had a good time. Dave bought A n n a a new, expensive dress.
T h en they w ent to a cinem a and, afterwards, to a restaurant. Peter
played cricket th a t Saturday. He never knew about A n n a ’s day w ith
Dave. H e was playing in another village and returned to W oodend
very late.
Dave and A nna were also very late. Dave stopped his car near The
Corner Shop. T he night was warm. ‘Thanks, Dave,’ said A nna. ‘It
was a lovely day.’ ‘I enjoyed it too,’ said Dave. H e pu t his arm round
h er shoulders and kissed her.
It was a quick kiss. But for A nna, it was wonderful.
he summer passed. The Corner Shop was always busy.
Sometimes, Dave opened th e shop o n Sundays too. A nna
earned a lot of money. Everyone thought th a t she was happy.
But life was difficult for her. She liked Dave. He was her boss, and
he was older th an her. But Peter was h er fiance, and he was about
th e same age. Dave was quite rich, but Peter had no money. Dave
bought A n n a clothes, and he took her out. Peter did n o t buy her
clothes and never took h er anywhere. H e was more interested in
football. A n n a did n o t like football.
Now it was September. Peter played football every Saturday. O ne
Saturday, there was a big football m atch on television. M r H art had
th e biggest television in th e village and he invited some people to
his house. H e invited Peter and A nna.
O n Friday, th e day before the m atch, A n n a was working in the
shop all day. A t five o ’clock, she locked the shop door. Two minutes
later, the bell rang and A n n a w ent to th e door. T here was a young
m an outside. H e was carrying a small case.
‘H ello,’ she said. ‘C an I help you?’
‘I hope so,’ said th e young man. ‘1 w ant to see M r Slatin.’
‘I’m afraid th a t the shop is closed now,’ said A nna. ‘We are open
tomorrow m orning.’
‘But I’ve got an appointm ent,’ said th e young man.
T h en Dave spoke behind A nna. She had n o t seen him.
‘Yes, I’ve been waiting for you,’ said Dave. ‘You’re late.’
‘I’m very sorry Mr Slatin, said the young man. ‘I w a s. . .’
‘N ever mind. N ever m ind’ said Dave rudely.
His rudeness surprised A nna. T h e young m an seemed afraid.
‘But can you see me now?’ h e asked.
‘Yes,’ said Dave. ‘Come in.’
Dave turned to A nna.

A t five o'clock, she locked the shop door.
Two minutes later, the bell rang and A nna went to the door.
8 Football Match
he n ext day was the day of the big football match. M r H art had
invited about te n people. A n n a did n o t w atch th e game. She
was helping Mrs H art in the kitchen. They were making tea.
It was a good game and everyone was enjoying it.
A t half-tim e, Peter w ent into th e kitchen.
‘W hy d o n ’t you come and w atch th e m atch, A nna?’ h e said. ‘It’s
really good. Come on!’
A n n a laughed. ‘N o, thanks,’ she said. ‘I’m helping Mrs H art.
Look, h ere’s th e tea. C an you take it in to the others?’
‘O K,’ said Peter. ‘It’s a terrific m atch. Mike Bailey scored a great
goal.’
Peter took th e tea into th e sitting room and th e second half of the
m atch started.
T h e second half was very exciting. M ike Bailey scored another
goal after tw enty minutes. T h e score was 2-0.
T h en th e other side scored two quick goals. It was 2-2. T here
were only five m inutes of the m atch left.
‘Come o n !’ shouted Peter. ‘Com e on, Mike! L et’s have another
goal!’
In th e last seconds of the match, Mike Bailey scored the winner.
It was his third goal of the m atch.
But som ething was wrong! T h e o th er team ’s goalkeeper was
injured. Bailey had been very near the goalkeeper and he had kicked
the ball very hard. T h e ball had h it th e goalkeeper’s neck.
Mrs H art and A n n a came in from the kitchen.

The young man’s face was white. It was white with fear.
‘A nna, it’s after five o’clock. You can go hom e now.’
‘I w on’t be long,’ said A nna.
Dave was angry. ‘Hurry up and go hom e,’ he said.
But A n n a w anted to stay. She w anted to know about the young
man. T he young m an followed Dave to the back of the shop and
into the Special Orders room.
A nother Special Order! A n o th er Special Customer! A n n a
waited.
But soon it was half past five. A n n a pu t her coat o n and left the
shop. She closed the door very loudly. T h e n she w ent round the
com er, and waited.
Soon, there was a noise. T he young m an was leaving the shop.
A n n a could n o t see him , but she could h ear him . H e was speaking
to Dave.
‘A re you sure?’ said th e young man.
‘W h at do you mean?’ asked Dave.
‘Is this the only way?’ said the young man.
‘Yes, it is,’ said Dave. ‘D on’t worry. Everything will be all right.
Goodbye.’
A n n a heard the shop door close. She came round the com er
and saw th e young m an. H e was walking quickly to his car. A n n a
noticed immediately th a t he was n o t carrying his case. She followed
him.
‘Excuse m e,’ she said. ‘You’ve forgotten something. You have left
som ething behind.’
T he young m an turned round. A n n a stopped. Suddenly she was
frightened. T he young m an’s face was white. It was w hite w ith fear.
‘Please go away,’ said th e young man. ‘Leave me alone. I w ant to
go home. Leave me alone.’
H e got into his car and drove off. A n n a stood in th e street and
watched him . She was thinking.
W hy had the young m an come to The Corner Shop ? W h at was his
Special Order? A nd why had he left his small case w ith Dave Slatin?
A nna did not watch the game. She was helping Mrs Hart in the kitchen.

The T V showed a picture o f Mike Bailey and the interviewer.
‘W h a t’s happened?’ said A nna. ‘W h a t’s wrong?’
‘It’s Brian Thomas, th e goalkeeper,’ said Peter. ‘H e’s injured.’
It was serious. T he goalkeeper had broken his neck.
Later, they all w atched the news on TV. They saw pictures of
Mike Bailey’s third goal. It was a great goal. T hey saw th e ball h it
the goalkeeper. It was an accident.
T he T V announcer said, A n d now over to our sports
studio for an interview w ith M ike Bailey.’
T hey all w atched the interview. T h e T V showed a picture of
Mike Bailey and the interviewer.
‘M ike,’ said the interviewer, ‘three goals in one match!
How do you feel about that?’
But Mike Bailey said nothing. H e could n o t speak. H e tried to
speak, but he could not. It was terrible.
T he interviewer tried another question. ‘Let me ask you about the
third goal, Mike. It was a great goal. But how do you feel about the
injury to Brian Thomas?’
It was a silly question. T he injured goalkeeper would never play
football again. Mike Bailey said nothing. He looked very ill.
W h en the interview ended, M r H art turned off th e TV.
N o one noticed th a t A n n a had left the room. Mike Bailey had
looked frightened. A n n a was frightened too. Mike Bailey and A n n a
had m et before. T he day before, at The Corner Shop.
