Fun derivational morphology stuff?
• Not much!
-стрелка is a diminutive formed from
стрела (-/к-а)
-габаритный is a relational adjective
formed from габарит (a noun meaning
clearance-related size)
- and…
There’s “по запарке” which I just
learned as a set phrase…
Turns out that запарка means ‘pressing’ or
‘steaming’ (it’s what happens when you get
your clothes pressed) and is derived from
the verb: запарить which has at its heart
пар ‘steam’.
Aspectual Analysis: We already saw this but
let’s hit the highlights….
We had ongoing activities in the imperfective in the
chorus: (these activities are, it seems, ongoing)
Люди кричат, задыхаясь от счастья
И стонут так сладко и дышат так часто
Что хочется двигаться с каждой секундой
быстрей
Делая, делая, делая новых людей
And a habitual sequence and achievements in
the perfective:
• Выключив лампочки в сорок
электросвечей (achievement)
• Но ничего-ничего - погрустит и забудет
(habitual sequence)
• Через время появятся новые люди (an
achievement if ever there was one)
And of course, gnomic statements are in the
imperfective:
• Люди ночами делают новых людей
