Text for Listening An extract from a BBC Radio 4 call-in radio show. Changing Households (4 mins) What sort of household do you now live in? At the moment we are not, but for the last three years we've had a foreign teenager living with us who goes to the sixth form college on our road and two from ... two Spanish ones, one from [me..] from China and one Czech girl, they've lived with us for 10 months each. Now, that is a lot of very different backgrounds that you're living with? It is, oh yes. What sort of different things do they bring into the household? 1 Well, they bring what all teenagers bring, to some extent. I mean we've been enormously amazed by them. They're 16 or 17 when they come, and they're studying abroad living with a strange family. And they bring whatever they have had from their own family, which we don't really know. So often they are actually more helpful around the house than our own children. And we don't know what they've been allowed to do in their own country, so that's always a bit difficult at first. And do you have to act in loco parentis? To a degree, 1 mean we are not actually foster parents, but we've had sort of set rules as we would for our own teenagers. While they've been here, we've had one of our own teenagers still at home. And so we've had to decide what time they can stay out until, and knowing where they are. And they've been sort of extremely obedient in the first term and rather less so in the last two terms. What sort of liberties have they been taking? Well, not coming back when they're meant to come back. But probably more difficult, they don't actually know where they are. Although they've intended to let us know where they are, sometimes they don't know where they are, because they haven't grown up here like our own house. So they've agreed to go out with someone, and said they'll phone and had no phone reception or have said they were in Poulton, which is our local area, while in fact they were in an adjacent area, not knowing the address. So those are the things that have been difficult. And how much is it helping you with the cost of running the house? Well, we did it partly to fill an empty nest to some extent, I think, to be really honest. But also we had two children at university, and the cost of supporting two through university, and we thought it would help with that. We thought it'd be good for our remaining child who used to be one of three and suddenly was on his own, though he didn't like the idea at first - in fact, he really-really didn't like the idea at first. Did he settle to it? Well, if you'd seen the first girl when she arrived, he settled to it very quickly. She was gorgeous. Yes, and his jaw dropped. But ... so that did make it easier. And she was very keen to be his friend because he was the only other young person around before she started at college. And you don't make a lot of money from it, but it does help with the running of the house, definitely. And what impact has it had on their acquisition of English? Oh, it improved phenomenally. It improved because they're at college, I have to say, we don't do it single-handedly. They are at college in the day and they study in English, which is amazing. But because they have to operate entirely in English, and with us having our own teenager at home, they acquire teenage English, and that's really helpful to them. Well, July Gory, thank you very much for calling us. Письменное задание на основе прослушанного текста. Paragraph С Erasmus This popular scheme aims to increase student mobility within the European Union and associated states. Participants under this scheme get to spend a semester at a foreign university, often receiving a grant from the EU or their home department. By the start of the next academic year, more than one million students will have benefited under Erasmus. Not only do you get to sit through hours of lectures in the local language, you also gain a cultural insight into the country. France, Germany and Spain are always popular, but the EU encourages applications to countries where less prominent languages are spoken, such as Greece and Portugal. Paragraph D Theoretically, students of any discipline can participate in the Erasmus scheme, although it depends on the involvement of your specific department in the project. The reality is that, in many universities, the scheme is most commonly implemented for modern languages students. Paragraph E U21 For a French student like me, Melbourne in Australia seems an unlikely destination, yet I was assigned there in my second year. Universitas21 is a multinational consortium of "prestigious" higher education institutions throughout the world, which have joined forces to offer their students the opportunity to study abroad for a semester. Paragraph В Let me offer an alternative from my own experience. After I moved into a new neighbourhood with my two children, my older daughter experienced severe bullying from a neighbour's child teasing, name-calling, pushing and shoving, threatening with fists. It ended in her demanding my daughter's small allowance. 27 Paragraph С When my distressed daughter eventually told me what was going on, I decided to talk to the girl in question. I knocked on her door and asked if she could come out and talk to me - I wanted no parents involved at this point, and luckily they weren't home. I told her what I had heard from my daughter and wanted to know from her why she was mistreating her so. Paragraph D 1 She was clearly shaken (and worried that I might call in her parents) and told me she hadn't really meant it, but she was getting my daughter ready for a tough neighbourhood where "this happens all the time". It had earlier happened to her too. "You have to learn to be tough," she assured me. Paragraph E 1 listened to her imaginative explanation and then asked her if she could instead protect my daughter who was new in the area and didn't know very many other kids, and if she could introduce her to others of her age because my daughter was a little shy. "Of course I'll do that and make sure nobody hurts her," she assured me eagerly. I then invited her to my house for hot chocolate - and to meet with my daughter. End of story. Paragraph F They never became good friends, but my daughter felt safe in the ex-bully's presence and in the neighbourhood. She felt indeed that someone (the former bully) was looking after her. I ended up asking the girl to do small jobs for me, for which I paid her, and she confided in me about her own fears and worries. She was a big girl who was at the receiving end of a lot of name-calling, and she compensated by becoming a bully in a survival-of-the-fittest manner. Paragraph G She was not criminalized, nor was she punished by her parents (who were never informed of the incident). She changed her behaviour and attitude, and my daughter gained self-confidence and faith in humankind. Sometimes a human, commonsensical and private approach brings quicker and more lasting results than all the law enforcement, educational and psychological measures combined. a) At what point in the bullying did the mother decide to take action? 1) When she learnt that her daughter's pocket money had been stolen. 2) When her daughter told her about the bully. 3) When she saw her daughter being pushed and shoved. 28 b) How does the bully justify her behaviour? 1) She said she didn7 mean to be tough on the girl. 2) She claimed that she didn 7 mean to hurt the girl and was getting her ready for life. 3) She said she had been mistreated herself and didn't mind it. c) In what way did the bully help the writer's daughter? 1) She did small jobs for her. 2) She introduced her to her best friend. 3) She looked after her one way or another. d) Why did the neighbour's girl become a bully? 1) She was aggressive by nature. 2) She thought it was fun. 3) She was bullied herself and wanted to get even. 29
