Classical music
Most young people like pop music but there
are teenagers who prefer Rossini and
Beethoven to rock. Different composers
from different countries have conquered
the hearts and feelings of people all over
the world. Germany, Italy and Russia are
internationally known as musical
countries. Sometimes we spend our free
time, listening to music by W. Mozart and
other composers. His “ 4th Symphony”
impressed us very much. Such music can
evoke different feelings. It enriches people
and appeals to their hearts.

POP MUSIC
“Pop” is short for “popular” and there
has always been popular music.
Nowadays young people prefer
modern music. If you want to listen
to it you can attend the music halls
and the concerts of popular groups
and singers. Many people enjoy
visiting their concerts. They buy
tickets beforehand and often take
flowers for their favourite singers.

Jazz
Jazz was born in the USA,
Louisiana, New Orleans. There
were large cotton plantations.
Slaves were brought from Africa to
work in the fields. In Louisiana and
the city of New Orleans the slave
owners were French. They let the
slaves and the free blacks play
drums and horns. Black musicians
in New Orleans combined
European musical instruments and
songs with African rhythms. They
made a new musical style which
was later called jazz. It soon
became an important part of
popular music in America.

BLUES
The blues was born in the
Mississipi River Delta in the early
1890s. After the Civil War, the
slaves were free, but the life was
not easy. In the South, work
camps were formed. Black
people from the camps worked
on farms and build up the
Mississipi river banks. On
weekends, the workers got
together at picnics or drinking
places. Travelling black
musicians with guitars
entertained them. The musicians
sang songs about the difficult life
of the workers. Those songs
were called the blues. But blues
songs were not always sad. The
blues was a new kind of music
and soon spread all over
America.

RAGTIME
By the late 1800s America
was a rich country, and for
many people those were
happy times. A piano was a
sign of succes. At home,
usually only ladies played
the piano. Their favourite
songs were church songs(
hymns), and sad songs that
told a story( ballads).
During this time black
musicians started to play a
new kind of piano music
called ragtime. Ragtime
had a new beat

ROCK AND ROLL
Until the 1950s there wasn’t a style of
music just for young people. That all
changed when rock and roll began. Since
then, hundreds of styles and stars have
come and gone.
Rock’ n’ roll began in America. Some of its
first big stars were black –Chuck Berry,
Fats Domino and Little Richard. They
brought traditional “ rhythm and blues’’ to
a big new TV audience. Then, white
singers began to copy them. One of the
first was Bill Haley. There were other
white rockers, too, like Jerry Lee Lewis
and Buddy Holly. But the most popular of
them all was Elvis Aaron Presley.
