Now we are ready to start.

Any idea of how you want it?
No idea at all, but it’s my birthday tomorrow; all the family are coming and Mum wants
me to look as good as possible.
Ok, a classic cut then…Hmm, if you want my opinion, you wear your hair too long for
your type of face.
Do I? All my friends say it suits me.
Yes, but your friends are not beauty experts, are they? Trust me, in half an hour you
won’t recognise yourself.
I hope I will!

So, what seems to be the problem, er, Jim, isn’t it?
Yes, that’s right. You examined me last week. I had a sore throat.
Yes, I remember. How are you feeling now?
My throat is fine, but I have another problem – I’ve got a stomachache.
Well, what did you eat yesterday?
Oh, almost nothing. I skipped breakfast as I was already late for school…
Hmm.
Then I was too busy to have lunch because we needed to buy a present - it was my
friend’s birthday… And then we headed to the birthday party… where I had a huge piece
of cake, but that couldn’t cause my stomachache, could it?

So, if you want to celebrate something, on special occasions for example, we have lots of
options too.
It’s actually our son’s birthday next Saturday and we would like to do something special
for him as a kind of present.
How old will he be?
He’s turning 10.
A good age for some adventure!
Hmm.
What about a one-day excursion to “Adventure Island”? A ship takes you from the port
at 10am on Saturday. You get to the island at 11. There, you and your son can take part
in all kinds of activities like treasure hunting, fishing and barbecuing the fish on the
beach. It would be a great idea to invite some of his friends too, don’t you think?
Dialogue D

Have you got any idea what she wants?
I don’t know. We gave her a ceramic vase last year, remember?
Yes. She didn’t feel well on her birthday but our present seemed to cheer her up. What
would you say to this tea set?
Hmm. Nice. And it’s decorated with famous tourist sights. Grandma will like it I think.
And have a look at this set of combs. They are made of wood, with some nice stone
decorations. Grandma would enjoy them too, wouldn’t she?
You have 20 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 20 seconds.)
Now you will listen to the dialogues again. (Repeat.)
This is the end of the task. You now have 20 seconds to check your answers. (Pause

Now we are ready to start.
Hi, everybody! I’m really happy to welcome you to our vocational camp. Let me give you
some information about our camp and the daily routine and then I will answer your questions, ok?
So, it’s actually the first time we’ve ever arranged camping with sleeping in real tents. In
previous years our campers lived in small cottages on the river bank. But, due to the flood in the
spring (I’m sure you remember the news broadcast on all the national channels), those cottages
were completely destroyed and, even more unfortunately, so were several blocks of flats in the
settlement down the river.
Anyway, the cottages won’t be ready to live in until September, so we’ve decided to
challenge you to camp in tents, just the way it’s traditionally supposed to be. Fortunately, we have

got just the weather we need. Even now, it the middle of June, it’s very warm and the weather
forecast promises us high temperatures till the middle of July.
So, we are lucky with the weather but the warmth and humidity have caused a sharp increase
in the mosquito population. This isn’t a big problem, a mosquito bite cannot kill you (it’s not like
a snake bite or anything), but those of you who may be allergic to mosquito bites should be careful
and use special medicine if needed. Our doctor, who’s always available, will supply you with
everything necessary.
Well, ok, and now let’s get to our activity programme.
All campers are supposed to be awake by 7am. Breakfast is scheduled for 8am. Apart from
breakfast there will be a mid-morning snack, lunch, early dinner (at about 6pm) and, finally, tea and
biscuits or sandwiches at 9pm. We understand five meals a day is a necessity because exercising in
the fresh air requires lots of energy. In case you feel hungry between meals, there’s a small shop
where you can buy some snacks. It’s over there, next to the empty swimming pool, which was also
damaged by the flood and needs to be repaired before we can use it again.
And, finally, exercise and activities! Traditionally, at the end of the term, we play a big
volleyball game with the guys from the other camp, which is up the river. We host the game and it’s
a really great event. So volleyball is the top sport here and you are encouraged to practice it any
time you want to. In fact, we encourage you to practice even when you don’t want to very much!
There’s also an opportunity to play tennis, badminton and football, just in case you get tired of
volleyball.
There’s another thing I have to tell you about. The camp is an internet-free zone. This means
you can’t use your computers or tablets. There’s no connection here at all, so if you need to contact
your families you can use the phone in the main building. As an alternative to the Internet, we can
offer you books. There are lots of shelves with traditional paper books in the main building which
you can borrow at any time, but please put them back when you are through.
Any questions, or shall we go on with the tour?
Yes, you in the blue t-shirt…(fades away)
You have 30 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 30 seconds.)
Now you’ll hear the text again. (Repeat.)
This is the end of the task. You now have 30 seconds to check your answers.
(Pause 30 seconds.)
This is the end of the Listening Test.
Время, отведённое на выполнение заданий по аудированию, истекло.

3. the attractions for children?
4. the place where the games are held?
5. the food to enjoy at the games?
6. the history of the games?
7. the participants’ clothes?
A
The Highland Games are a unique combination of culture, sport and social entertainment. From
May to September, a full programme of Highland games takes place in small towns and
villages across Scotland, as well as on the grounds of famous castles. In the lovely Scottish
village of Braemar you might even be lucky enough to see the Royal Family, who traditionally
attends the games each year.
B
The Highland Games are believed to have some royal roots. According to some written
evidence, in the 11th century, King Malcolm III of Scotland arranged the first foot race. He
wanted to find the fastest runner in the land to be his royal messenger. Another legend says that
the Highland Games were held to choose the best bodyguards for the rich chief of the clan.
C
So what do people do at the Highland Games? Well, they compete, of course. There are heavy
athletic disciplines like throwing the hammer and rolling logs, which are mostly for men.
Besides sports, there are also cultural events, like bagpipe playing, highland dancing and many
other forms of traditional highland celebrations. The Games usually last around four days.
D
The dancing and musical events are usually very emotional and impressive. Spectators enjoy
Scottish melodies performed by violins, flutes, and drums, but best of all is a game of hundreds
of bagpipes. The bagpipes are a Scottish musical instrument that consists of a bag and pipes.
When the air blown into the bag is forced out through the pipes, it makes a peculiar sound.
Playing the bagpipes is one of the most important symbols of the Games.
E
The Highland Games give everyone a chance to try local Scottish cuisine. Various companies
compete to offer various types of traditional Scottish refreshment to guests and do their best to
set new records. The world record for the biggest bowl of porridge, for example, was set at the
Cupar Highland Games in Fife in 2010. The huge breakfast of 690 litres of porridge could have
fed as many as 2,000 people.

At the Highland Games almost everyone wears the traditional highlander clothing. This is the
kilt, a thick tartan skirt that Scottish men and boys traditionally wear. Spectators are allowed to
wear whatever clothes they want, but for the athletes, dancers, and musicians taken part –
wearing a kilt is a must.

David Livingstone
David Livingstone was a famous explorer of the African continent. He was born in 1813 in
Scotland. He was the second of seven children, all of whom shared a room in a tenement building
owned by the mill company. His father worked as a salesman, but he was not very successful. His
family was rather poor, but his parents understood the importance of education, so David was
taught to read and write by his father. When the boy turned ten, he started working for the mill
company and attended school lessons in the evenings. In addition to schooling, he studied Latin and
read a lot on natural history.
By 1836 David had saved enough money to enter Anderson's University, Glasgow. His main
subject was medicine, and he was very enthusiastic about studying it. In 1840, he moved to London
to complete his medical studies at the British and Foreign Medical School and, when he qualified,
was sent to South Africa as a missionary doctor. In 1845, he married Mary Moffat, the daughter of a
fellow missionary.
Livingstone’s initial aim was to spread Christianity and bring commerce and "civilisation" to
African people, but he later became focused on exploring the continent. In 1852, he began a four
year expedition to find a route from the upper Zambezi to the coast. This filled huge gaps in western
knowledge of central and southern Africa. In 1855, Livingstone came across a wonderful waterfall
which he named 'Victoria Falls', after Queen Victoria of Great Britain. He reached the mouth of the
Zambezi on the Indian Ocean in May 1856, becoming the first European to cross the width of
southern Africa.
Livingstone gained a reputation as a great doctor, almost a mystical healer, with local
African tribes. He successfully treated lots of deadly African diseases, but he was not a wizard –
sadly, he could not cure his wife of malaria, and she died in 1862. In 1864, Livingstone returned to
Britain for what would be his last trip home. When there, he went on speaking tours and spoke
passionately against slavery. He did a lot to make people aware of the tragedy of the African slaves.
David Livingstone died in Africa on 1 May 1873. His body was taken back to England and
buried in Westminster in 1851.

Canada is not as cold as people believe. Of course, Arctic Circle temperatures are below
freezing for seven months a year, but during the summer months the southern provinces
often experience high levels of humidity and temperatures that can go above 30 degrees.
Western and south-eastern Canada experiences high rainfall, but the Prairies are dry, with
between just 250 mm to 500 mm of rain every year.
Along with the possibility of severe weather, there is the constant threat of geological
catastrophes in Canada. Since 1840, landslides and avalanches have caused billions of
dollars in damage. These mass movements of soil, rock or snow often occur in all parts of
the country, both in mountains and flatlands, usually without warning. The emergency
services are always on alert to deal with such disasters.
C
Ice skating in Canada has been enjoyed by millions of people for over 150 years. Many
Canadians build backyard rinks where they can skate and play hockey in the safety of their
own yards. Others pack up the car and travel to frozen ponds or lakes on sunny Saturdays.
The lunch is packed, and the equipment is loaded for a fun day out with family or friends.
D
Today, skiing is one of Canada's largest industries, drawing hundreds of thousands of
visitors each year to the slopes. However, a good trip to this majestic ski country requires
proper preparation, so make sure you have all you need. Ski gear consists of a set of skis,
proper ski boots to protect the feet and ankles and keep the skis secure, and poles. Other
important items are helmets, goggles and, of course, a good pair of gloves.
E
Sun Peaks is the second largest skiing area in British Columbia, and is the third-largest in the
country. The European-style village is located between three mountains. Winter guests enjoy
downhill and cross-country skiing, as well as snowboarding. Summer activities include
hiking, golfing and downhill mountain biking. It offers a wide selection of accommodation,
restaurants and shopping boutiques to suit a variety of tastes.

More than a century and a half has passed since the day when the great inventor, Nikola
Tesla, was born, but interest in his talent and his mysterious personality is still alive.
Nikola Tesla was born to a family of a Serbian priest in 1856 on the territory of the AustroHungarian Empire. Nicola was the fourth of five children in the family – he had one brother and
three sisters. The father served in a little church and wanted his son to become a priest too, but
Nikola was keen on engineering. He probably took this interest from his mother. She was a hardworking Serbian woman who had never had any formal education but was very clever and inventive
in designing all kinds of household appliances and mechanical devices. She had a remarkable
memory and, though she had never learnt to read and write, could memorize long Serbian poems
just by hearing them once or twice. Nikola inherited these abilities from her.
In his early years, Nikola contracted cholera. He was in bed for nine months and nearly died
of the disease several times. In a desperate moment, his worried father promised to send him to the
best engineering school if he recovered from his illness. Nicola's father didn’t forget his promise
and so, in 1875, the recovered Nikola Tesla entered the Austrian Polytechnic School and started his
remarkable career as an engineer and inventor.
Eventually, Tesla moved to the United States, where he became famous for his work with
electricity, radio waves, and the wireless transmission of energy. Tesla supposed that it was possible
to generate electricity from the atmosphere and to transmit it wirelessly over huge distances. Tesla
performed most of his experiments in a specially equipped laboratory in Colorado, the USA.
According to some of his biographers, the results were astonishing – Tesla was able to create
artificial lightning, much more powerful than the natural thing. Unfortunately, the laboratory was
destroyed in 1904 and, after his death in 1943, lots of Tesla’s discoveries were lost. The knowledge
he had is still a mystery to many contemporary scientists.
Example: Nikola Tesla was Austrian by nationality.
