Ivan Turgenev and Henry James in the “Many-Windowed House”

The article reviews the widespread idea of similarity between Ivan Turgenev’s narrative
method and that of Henry James. While analysing the narrator-character relationships in “Home
of the Gentry” and “The Portrait of a Lady” special attention is paid to the notions of “point of
view” and “objectivity”. It is argued that James’ treatment of “objectivity” is fundamentally
different from Turgenev’s. The article also discusses the problem of “dramatization” in the
Anglo-American writer’s prose.
